How good it is to learn more about how nature's free gifts of wind and water have been used so effectively for many years to drive wind and water mills to make one of the basic essentials in the nation's diet, flour. Hearing about the history and workings of mills, the sails, the machinery, and the mill stones from an active miller and maintenance man, was a privilege to all who attended. The life of a miller and his place in society was discussed and the number of sayings in our language which resulted from his life such as ‘rule of thumb’- the miller feels his grain with his thumb and take your turn,-to ‘take your turn’- is to be the next person to have corn or wheat ground by the turning of the
millstone. Charles Baxter also introduces school children to the subject encouraging hopefully the next generation of millers. Charles has a variety of experience as a miller and is involved at both Wilton, a wind mill and also at Coleshill, a water mill. He willingly answered questions from members and offered to take a small group around Wilton -so watch this website.
