STELLA TIDMARSH, OUTINGS & HOLIDAY GROUP, UTRNTA

Stella and I started to organise day outings for the Upper Thames & Ridgeway National Trust Association in the same year, 2013, under the valuable guidance of the other members of the Group, Marianne Schofield and John Clements. Stella organised Croft Castle, Hereford, and I undertook the Cardiff Castle outings for that year.

After learning the ropes of putting together interesting & varied trips for the year, undertaking recces, organising coaches and timings and, not to mention, the dreaded mastery of the coach microphone (!), we became proud members of our small team.

Stella proved herself to be an invaluable member of that team, with her vast knowledge of both the surrounding area and counties and further afield.  She always surprised me at our annual meeting to put together an itinerary for the year. That knowledge and her understanding of what made a good day out for our members was a winning combination. Over the years she was responsible for suggesting and leading on a wide range of outings. Visits such as Kenwood House, London (after the pandemic) being serenaded by Gilbert & Sullivan singers at Grims Dyke, Harrow, the Wetland Wildlife Trust at Slimbridge, Bletchley Park and its WWII associations, Stoke Bruerne Canal Trip, Hereford Cathedral & Cider Museum, Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway, all interspersed with various National Trust houses & gardens.

Stella joined a 3 person Holiday Group in 2019 and helped put together the itinerary taking in the North East Area, staying at Lumley Castle Hotel in County Durham.  It was just as well, as those of you who attended know, we lost John Clements’ contribution when he fell at our lunchtime stop, broke his hip and had to be transferred to a nearby hospital on our first day.  Stella’s calm influence helped salvage the holiday and we managed to see it through, aided by our ever-trusty Barnes driver, Phil.

Over the years, we had tremendous fun putting together our various trips and doing our recces to ensure that they worked.  Thanks for everything Stella.
