A leisurely early lunch at the South Gloucester Service Station in the
sunshine was an excellent start to a challenging, interesting and most
enjoyable day visiting a beautiful part of Gloucestershire. Owlpen
Manor, gardens and church might even qualify as a secret gem down lanes
that are not designed for a 53 seater Barnes coach, the driver, Robert,
was very skilled and helpful throughout the day. There were only a couple of
spare seats as the list for this popular destination had to be
restricted. The family, Sir Nicholas and Lady Mander, who very kindly share the
history of the Manor house, the farm and their connection to this fascinating area,
limit numbers attending each visit for good reason as the compact
gardens include several different levels, steps, topiary, hedges and
wonderful views. The house was built in the period 4150 to 1616.
We were given access to the Manor House and church. It is recognised as one of the most romantic Tudor manor houses in Southern England. The gardens are based round an early formal garden, with hillside hanging terraces added in the 16 and 17th
centuries and Box parterres. Refreshments were enjoyed prior to relying on our competent driver for a smooth ride back after a full & enjoyable day.
The Chairman, John Taylor, took this opportunity to speak to everyone about the need to find 3 or 4 volunteers to replace Stella as visits & holiday organiser next year.
