Averbury Manor & Henge

Averbury Manor & Henge   What an amazing day at Avebury Manor and Henge, starting with a wonderful talk by the Senior curator, about the ups and downs of the Manor starting with the dreadful flood which closed the Manor for two years, but during the renovations they found some wonderful artifacts under floor boards and in the walls. There have been several owners of the property but the Last was Alexander Keiller whose family were the founders of the Dundee Marmalade business, he was also a well respected architect, coming from a very wealthy background he had the resources to maintain the house and grounds of which are very exstensive . Then in 1925 he started to renovate the Henge which dates back to the Neolithic period the stone circles cover a vast area and make Stone Henge look very insignificant in comparison. They still don’t know why they were built,was it for Worship of some kind nobody knows,just like Stone Henge, but there is much more to see and take in it will definitely need another visit.
