Terracotta Army

Lew Lawton's talk on the  Chinese Terracotta Warriors also included a short introduction and explanation of some of their hieroglyphics, their construction and pronunciation (which members of the audience tried to emulate.) The army, near Xi ‘an in NW of China was a form of funerary art buried with the Emperor with the purpose of protecting him in his afterlife. The talk  included illustrations showing the vast area covered by Pit 1 that was originally discovered by a farmer and painstakingly uncovered by archaeologists.    Numerous warriors have been reconstructed using fragments of the original forms .  It is amazing to think of not only the skill of those who created the models originally during the Qin dynasty 2,200 but the patience and skill of those who have revealed  The Eighth Wonder of The World for all to see.
